Spine Care Specialists of Chicago Illinois and surrounding areas can diagnose cervical disc herniation. Cervical disc herniation occurs when a cervical (neck) disc ruptures or bulges causing pain, numbness, weakness in the chest, neck, shoulders, hands, and arms. In some cases patients complain of a "shooting pain".
Cervical Disc Herniation; C1-C2, C2-C3, C3-C4, C4-C5, C5-C6, C6-C7 . A Cervical Disc Herniation is the second most common herniated disc.
Many times cervical disc herniation can be treated without surgery, ideally rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and specific exercises are recommended. Spine Care Specialists may also suggest physical therapy to help alleviate pain. If the pain is still too great spinal injections may be considered. In most cases cervical disc herniation can and will improve. However if the cervical herniated disc is squeezing the spinal cord or nerves and constant pain is present surgery will be considered.
