Spine Care Specialists of Chicago Illinois and surrounding areas proudly offers our patients disc placement surgery. Disc replacement surgery is a procedure that replaces a diseased disc with an artificial disc. Disc replacement surgery can occur in the cervical section (upper spine), thoracic section (center spine, also the least common type of disc replacement) or lumbar section (lower spine, also the most common type of disc replacement) of the spine. There are two types of disc replacement surgery as well. The first type is known as total disc replacement, which is when the entire disc is removed and replaced with an artificial disc. The second type of disc replacement is disc nucleus replacement. When a disc nucleus replacement occurs only the center of the disc is removed and replaced with an implant.

The one main reason for disc replacement surgery is degenerative disc disease. Degenerative disc disease is the normal process of aging bodies. Spinal discs begin to wear down as we get older and pain and discomfort can come along with the wearing. Contact the office of Dr. Dwight Tyndall and Dr. Nitin Khanna at Spine Care Specialists for more information on the risks and benefits of disc replacement and any other options that may be available to decrease your pain level.
