The COVID Pandemic and Spine Care
We are in the midst of an historic pandemic that has impacted every aspect of our lives. Our national health resources are strained and simple items such as gowns, gloves and masks are in short supply. The high risk of COVID-19 transmission has forced many states to order a halt on all elective procedures and shut down all but “essential” businesses.
I personally have had to reschedule at least eleven spine cases over the next 14 days as of March 30. This means many spine patients will continue to suffer in significant pain and endure their current symptoms as surgery, physical therapy and injections are delayed.
But, in times of challenge, we need to look for opportunities. This is a time to fundamentally alter our approach to spine care. As of Monday, March 30th, I initiated a TeleSpine interface and began seeing patients via their mobile phone, tablet or computer. Technology will allow increased availability and convenience for new and existing patients, as well as patients seeking a second opinion.
The historic model of a patient driving a significant distance, facing extended waiting room times, seems antiquated in our on-demand, high-tech world. Now I will be able to perform the same visit utilizing technology. A patient will not have to leave their home or office for a consultation.
Further, the opportunity for patients to seek a second opinion have never been better. While most surgeons are unable to perform elective surgery during this pandemic, it is the perfect time to spend 20 to 30 minutes having your case reviewed. Ensure all options, both surgical and nonsurgical, have been covered. Likewise, patients who have suffered injuries at work, and currently have an open claim, should take advantage of seeking a second opinion.
I have seen many patients over the years that have been told surgery was their only option. But many newer, nonsurgical interventions can help avoid a surgery. At a minimum these should be discussed and explored. Many patients who are offered complex, multilevel fusions with screws, plates, rods and cages will find, in many instances, a minimally invasive option to be available.
I have dedicated my career to performing the most minimally invasive and motion preserving procedure needed to improve pain and function for my patients. Reach out via email to schedule a convenient online appointment or a second opinion.
